Abstract
The 2026 football season will mark 100 years since Robert Neyland drew on his West Point expertise to build a football dynasty at the University of Tennessee. Although his name is memorialized on the massive campus stadium, surprisingly few present-day students and fans know much about the man. Lipscomb University professor and military historian Dr. Timothy Johnson had always been intrigued by the intersection of battlefield tactics and strategy on the gridiron. Johnson's book, Robert Neyland: The West Point Engineer Who Built Tennessee Football, forthcoming from Bloomsbury Publishing in July 2026, inspired a group of Lipscomb communication students to undertake an ambitious, feature-length biographical documentary about the man his players called "The Bull." Guided by Johnson's research, contacts, and insights, the student crew interviewed family members, passionate former players now in their 90s, coaches, broadcasters, historians, and boosters for what is believed to be the first comprehensive examination of Robert Neyland's journey to sports history. Fans these days have adopted the term GOAT... short for “The Greatest of All Time”. Our GOAT is The Bull.
